Allan Calvo fell this Wednesday in the knockout round of the men's singles table tennis tournament in Veracruz 2014, to put an end to participation in this discipline for ticos, held at the Omega Complex in Xalapa, Veracruz.
Calvo lost to Guatemalan Héctor Gatica 4-3 after entering to this round because of its success in the group stage played on Monday.
Gatica won the first quarter 11-9 and Calvo turned it over to the board with a double 11-7. Gatica tied the score at 11 to 6, the tico returned to the front with a clear 11-3 in the fifth, but closing, Gatica won 11-9 in the sixth inning and 11-8 in the final in order to advance to the second round and eliminate the Costa Rican.
In the same knockout round phase also left out the other Costa Rican who had passed the group stage Jeison Martinez, after losing 4-1 to Mexico's Guillermo Muñoz, after losing the first 14 to 12, winning the second 11-7 and being defeated in the following three figures identical 11-5.
On Tuesday, Allan Calvo and Angie Araya left out of the mixed doubles tournament, succumbing in the quarterfinals to the Cuban duo Andy Pereira and Leisy Jimenez, partial 11-7, 11-8, 11-3 while in men's doubles, César Fernández and Gersom Carballo were in the quarterfinals after beating Carlos Cui Belizeans and Tyron Tun 3-0 (11-7, 11-9 and 11-5) and losing to the Puerto Rican Hector Berrios and Richard Pietri 0-3 (9-11, 7-11, 5-11).
The other partner in the men's national branch, consisting of Allan Calvo and Jeison Martinez ran in the first round with Cuban Jorge Campos and Andy Pereira, who defeated the ticos in straight sets 6-11 5-11 and 4-11.
